Joint Senate Hearing to Explore Potential Welfare Fraud and Abuse

Wednesday, December 16 in Capitol's Hearing Room #1

Harrisburg – The Senate Majority Policy Committee, chaired by Sen. Ted Erickson (R-26), and the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, chaired by Sen. Pat Vance (R-31), will hold a joint public hearing next week on potential fraud and abuse in state welfare programs.

The hearing will be held Wednesday, December 16 at 9:30 a.m. in Hearing Room #1 of the Capitol's North Office Building.

The hearing will focus on potential fraud and abuse indentified through audits undertaken by the Department of the Auditor General. An August 2009 audit found that 45 percent of Special Allowance Program payments were issued without documented justification. A January audit indicated that the Department of Public Welfare made $3.3 million in improper payments on behalf of ineligible Medicaid recipients.

The hearing agenda will include Auditor General Jack Wagner and Secretary of Public Welfare Estelle Richman.
