Harrisburg – Sen. Ted Erickson (R-26) recently received the 2009 Legislative Leadership Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers (PACHC). The award was presented in recognition of Erickson’s leadership in advancing the mission of Pennsylvania’s Community Health Centers. PACHC is the state primary care association representing Federally Qualified Health Centers and other like-mission providers located in underserved areas throughout Pennsylvania. Sen. Erickson, Chairman of the Senate Public Health and Welfare Committee, has been in the forefront of the effort to improve health care access and expand Pennsylvania's health care safety net through the HealthNET PA legislative package. This package included Erickson’s Senate Bill 5, which would establish the Community-Based Healthcare Program for the expansion and site development of health care clinics across Pennsylvania to provide "medical homes" for 175,000 working poor clients and ease pressure on hospital emergency rooms. "Clinics are a crucial resource in providing affordable direct care -- not simply insurance -- to uninsured and low-income working Pennsylvanians,” said Erickson. "We need to invest in these clinics so that they can reach even more people who are in need of care but may not be able to afford it, particularly in these tough economic times."
